Because of their large volume, medical image data comprise the majority of data generated by a medical institution. Fortunately, DICOM serves as a global protocol standard by which these data can be communicated.
Unfortunately, however, conventional storage systems are not equipped with standardized mechanisms to receive and administrate DICOM data. The e-pacs DICOM Appliance solves this problem by equipping hard-disk-based storage systems with a DICOM Storage Service Class Provider.
This means that standard storage systems can be used for the manufacturer-independent storage of DICOM images. These data can be accessed independently of the currently implemented PACS system and at any desired time, and they remain archived for long periods of time.
PACS linkage of the storage system via the e-pacs DICOM Appliance occurs through standard DICOM commands; confirmation takes place via DICOM Storage Commitment. Accordingly, this storage system is independent of PACS because a long-term archive on DICOM basis can be integrated into nearly all well-known PACS systems. This facilitates the simple integration of the image storage into managed-storage solution.
